PONYTAIL

ponytail2aThe ever worn ponytail proves to be the most applied hairstyle of women and sometimes men alike. Hayley Booker from a leading hair salon “Style Avenue” on the Gold Coast (level 1, shop 20, Chevron Renaissance, 3240 Surfers Paradise Boulevard Surfers Paradise ph 5526 2226) states, “the ponytail is ever chic and classic because it is very practical, easy to do, easy to wear, looks great, is cheap and is the basic to many hairstyles seen in fashion magazines.” While the ponytail hairstyle looks just as the name suggests, this style is considered an informal style which is casual and carefree. However, in Georgian times, women considered the ponytail an informal style only suited to the boudoir. This opinion was carried right up until the 20th century. Today, the ponytail is more fashionable than ever on males as well as females. It is also very cool in summer. The ponytail is the most obvious hairstyle among women and every fourth women on the street is wearing one.

Lipstick is the most popular cosmetic used by women to date. However in ancient Egyptian times Queen Cleopatra’s lipstick wasn’t the creamy and waterproof substance that it is today, her lipstick was made out of crushed up carmine beetles ant ants. However lipstick was invented in Mesopotamia some 5000 years ago. Mesopotamian women used crushed semi-precious jewels to sprinkle over their lips and around their eyes, which gave a shimmering makeup. In the time around 3000 BC- 1500 BCE women were recorded as wearing a red dye on their lips.

LIPSTICK

In the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I, popularised lipstick, however she k0174856wore a vampirish, black coloured lipstick. Queen Elizabeth’s I predecessor queen Victoria despised makeup and had it banned as it was said that lipstick was a form of trickery or witchcraft that lured men into unwanted marriage. Popularity of lipstick grew with stage actors and prostitutes. Due to the popularity of lipstick with actors lipstick slowly gained popularity momentum and by 1884 Paris perfumeries had put out the first lipstick onto the market. The lipstick at that time was made of bees wax, deer tallow and castor oil and it was wrapped in silk paper. Silent films of the 1920’s and 1930’s only enhanced lipstick popularity with the invention of the first actual swivel tubed lipstick. Of which by the later part of the thirties, lipstick had progressed to every shade and hue of lipstick imaginable.

Today lipstick is as popular as ever with all day lasting effects ,sunscreens, lip conditioners and ‘non kiss-off’ kinds to name a few. Even organic lipstick is sold on today’s market. Today not too far removed from the ingredients in Queen Elizabeth I’s day, lipsticks main ingredients are Beeswax, Jojoba oils and Castor oil.
