GUM
The ancient Greeks had a version of chewing gum called ‘mastiche’, which was a gum produced from the resin of the Mastiche tree. Ancient man found many substances to chew throughout history. In 1869 Thomas Adams first came to realize the use of ‘chicle’ (resin from the Sapodilla tree) as a source of chewing gum.
However in modern times, Thomas Adams first invented gum in the United States in 1871, when he patented a machine that enabled him to produce the gum. A man named John Colgan, helped figure out a way to make the gum taste better than the sour chicle. By 1888 Adams had launched his improved chewing gum by the name of Tutti-Frutti which was sold by way of a vending machine placed in New York City subway stations.
Since then many other brands and flavours of gum have come onto the market, however the initial concept of chewing gum has never and is unlikely to ever go out of style. Try searching any ladies handbag and 9 out of 10 will have a packet of gum stashed away for chewing and or as a breath freshening staple.
